Series: Sacred Sins

Sin is easy to spot ... in others.  We're all great sin-sleuths when it comes to the mistakes and shortcomings in those around us, but what about the sin that resides in ME?  That's a much more difficult endeavor.

What could be more American than ... consumerism?  We Thrive as a nation by producing, consuming, importing, exporting, and doing so more, and more, and more.  But is this the way God designed it to be?

In 1981, a band called Black Flag recorded a song that carried these lyrics:  "Gimme, gimme, gimme - I need some more. Gimme, gimme, gimme - don't ask what for.  I know the world's got problems ...I've got problems of my own."  This song has been covered many times since, and it speaks to the heart of what we look at today, namely, that we can too easily be driven by a need to find our fulfillment in getting something more or in getting more of something.

We were all designed by God to be a people who hunger and thirst for Him, to fulfill the grand purposes He drafted into the very fiber of our being.  However, this life can subtly draw us away from that passion and purpose, and we can begin to simply exist. Or worse, we can be so dulled to that grand design that we begin to build walls and borders around ourselves, silently and overtly declaring that only those who look like, act like, sound like ME are welcome into His kingdom.  Today, we tackle these sacred sins that seek to thrive in our lives.

Comfort is, well, very COMFORTABLE, and we all like it.  On the surface, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting to be comfortable, but we discover that it can quickly be a killer to our spiritual lives when we begin submitting to my desire for comfort rather than submitting to God.

Our discussion today focused on the nature of what prayer really is, and we discovered that it is bigger, it is deeper, it is grander than what we might typically think.  We learned that prayer needs to move us into a growing soul-connection with God.

Our freedom is for more than simply doing whatever we want ... it is about be unrestrained in our ability to pursue the design and purpose given to use before the foundations of the earth were laid.  In light of that, we explore the notion that - while our health and happiness are good - God is more concerned with our holiness.  And we should be, too.

This week, after the tragic shooting (and other) events of the recent days, we reflect on the deceptive tactics of the enemy of Followers of Jesus.  This enemy wants to distract us from the good and enslave us to the bad.  We remember yet again the weight of the truth that - in Christ - we can truly be FREE.

This week we wrestled through the thought that we are often drawn back into the slavery of trying to earn God's favor after being set free from that prison.  The truth of God's truly free GRACE releases us from that trap.
